ANU Chancellor’s term extended

The Australian National University (ANU) Council has extended the term of its Chancellor, Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA FAIIA, until 31 December 2019.

ANU Pro-Chancellor Naomi Flutter said that Professor Evans, in chairing the ANU Council since January 2010, had led the University during a time of exceptional achievement, including overseeing the ANU being ranked in top 20 universities worldwide.

“Gareth has been a great leader of the ANU Council, providing stability and expertise. The Council was united in its decision for him to remain in the role and greatly values his experience, judgement and vision for the University,” she said.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt AC, praised the Chancellor’s contribution to the ANU over the past eight years.

As Chancellor, Gareth has set the benchmark for exceptional governance and leadership. He has brought energy and rigour to the role, and he shares my determination to build on our reputation as one of the finest universities in the world,” Professor Schmidt said.

“I am very pleased that he has agreed to remain our Chancellor.”

In his earlier public life, Professor Evans was a long-serving federal Parliamentarian and Cabinet Minister, serving from 1983 to 1996 as Attorney-General, Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Transport and Communications, and as Foreign Minister. He was subsequently President of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group from 2000 to 2009.

Professor Evans said he was delighted his term as Chancellor would continue to the end of 2019, giving him, with a full 10 years in the role, the opportunity to see some key strategic initiatives through to completion.

“I have had no prouder honour in my career than, as Chancellor, to chair this Council of extraordinarily talented Australians, to work with a superb Vice-Chancellor and his executive team, and to have the opportunity to help set the future strategic direction of our nation’s finest university ,” he said.

“The next two years will see key parts of the ANU Strategic Plan developed and delivered, and the opening of the fantastic new Union Court precinct at the heart of the University.

“I am delighted to accept the Council’s appointment until the end of 2019, to see some of these projects through and to help set the University’s course for even greater things to come.”
