ANU researchers recognised in 2019 ARC funding round

Researchers from The Australian National University (ANU) have received nearly $40 million in funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) in its 2019 program.

This includes 56 projects to receive about $23 million from the Discovery Projects program and 22 Discovery Early Career Researcher awards worth about $8 million.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt AC said the funding will go towards research into chemistry, health, astronomy, physic, issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region, languages, artificial intelligence and climate change, and other fields.

“ANU is the leading research institution in the Asia-Pacific region and our researchers spend their days investigating and solving the biggest challenges to face Australians and our regional neighbours,” Professor Schmidt said.

“This funding from the ARC is an investment in our nation’s and our neighbours’ future.”

Some ANU projects to receive ARC funding include:

  • Developing theories and algorithms to ultimately enable the elimination of cyber attackers and malicious users of online review systems and smart grids to improve Australia’s cyber security.
  • Advancing our knowledge of the mass loss of Earth’s ice caps and glaciers, and improving the capability to monitor changes on Earth using satellites
  • Discovering new evidence for the link between wealth and health costs and the benefits of greater gender equality, and identify new policy actions to solve the problem of gender inequality in employment and earnings
  • Optimising digital mental health care to improve the use of digital therapy tools among mental health care providers to meet the high demand for services in the community
