Friday, November 10, 2017 — The Australian National University (ANU) has boosted its position as one of the world’s most international universities by receiving 26 placements in the Government-led 2018 Australia Awards – Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships, worth $4.1 million.
The program, announced by Education Minister Simon Birmingham, funds travel to countries including Indonesia, China, Timor-Leste, Japan and Russia for research, study or professional development.
The recipients include 16 PhD research scholarships, seven postdoctoral scholarships, two Masters Research scholarships and one for professional development.
Under the program, 22 international students and researchers will come to ANU to further their studies and research.
In February the 2017 Times Higher Education rankings listed ANU at seventh in the world and number one in Australia in its list of international universities.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Harding said she was delighted with the Endeavour Scholarships.
"ANU has long prided itself on being a diverse and highly international community that values global engagement,” Professor Harding said.
"We have a strong commitment to draw on the best research from across the globe and to collaborate with researchers in other countries.
"Part of the ANU founding mission was to understand the world, and particularly the countries of Asia and the Pacific.
"We are home to leading centres for the study of the politics, economics and societies of the Asia-Pacific, including specialist areas on China, Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar and the nations of the South Pacific."
Dr Marina Iskhakova, a lecturer at the ANU College of Business and Economics, will travel with students to St Petersburg in winter 2018 to lead a Global Business Immersion course as part of the Endeavour Mobility grants.
Dr Iskhakova said she and the students would benefit greatly from the program.
“This will be a valuable and unique experience for our students,” she said.
“It will provide them with a deep understanding of the Russian business environment and economy and will help to them develop their own perspective of modern Russia with its enormous potential."
The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships aim to foster Australian research relationships across the world.
