Thursday, June 14, 2018 — The Australian National University’s John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) will partner with Europe’s preeminent life sciences laboratory through EMBL Australia, providing ANU researchers and scientists with access to Europe’s great biological research facilities. EMBL Australia is a partner organisation of EMBL, funded through a similar mechanism as EMBL European partner countries.
The collaboration with EMBL Australia will provide direct links with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). This will provide new collaborative research and training opportunities to current and future medical researchers and boost Australia’s capacity to address some of the biggest health issues of our time.
Head of JCSMR, Professor Simon Foote said EMBL has a record of success in research into fundamental biological problems.
“This partnership brings JCSMR into an advanced global network of researchers in Europe working across the fields of molecular biology,” Professor Foote said.
Professor Foote said the University was looking forward to welcoming Dr Barry Thompson as an EMBL Australia Group Leader at JCSMR next year. His focus will be on developing new cancer therapies.
“In returning to Australia after 20 years in Europe, I am excited to see that the JCSMR is comparable in terms of facilities and scientific quality with any of the leading European research institutes I have worked in,” Dr Thompson said.
“Partnership with EMBL Australia is important to me personally, having been an EMBL post-doc and I’m now keen to maintain my many scientific connections with Europe.”
Early-career researchers at ANU will have access to world leading facilities, be able to share ideas with their counter-parts in Europe and train alongside the world’s best scientists.
