MEDIA ALERT – ANU Climate Update 2019

The Australian National University Climate Update 2019 will be held tomorrow, Thursday 7 February at HC Coombs Lecture Theatre from 2:45pm.

The Climate Update, presented by the ANU Climate Change Institute, provides an overview of how the climate is changing and how we are responding to these changes in Australia and around the world.

Climate Change Institute Director Mark Howden said recent extreme heatwaves, rainfall and bushfires emphasise how important it is to maintain a safe and stable climate.

“Climate and atmospheric changes are accelerating, leading to more and more unprecedented climate-related events whether these are land or ocean-based heatwaves, fires, floods or biodiversity losses such as fish kills,” Professor Howden said.

“2018 saw increasing evidence that the window to act to constrain these trends is closing and that the response rate of both emission-reduction and climate adaptation risks lagging well behind the rates of change.”

The speakers at the Climate Update include:

  • Hon Dr Andrew Leigh, Shadow Assistant Treasurer
  • Commissioner Sean Hughes, Australian Securities and Investment Commission
  • Professor Kate Auty, ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment
  • Professor Helen Sullivan, Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU
  • Professor Tom Kompas, ANU and University of Melbourne
  • Rowan Foley, Aboriginal Carbon Foundation
  • Dr Hamish Clark, University of Wollongong

The Climate Update will also feature a presentation from Associate Professor Nerilie Abram on climate impacts on coral reefs.

“Oceans are essential for life on Earth, and new research shows that they are warming even faster than we had thought.”

“Unabated changes in the oceans are already damaging marine ecosystems, including Australia’s world heritage coral reefs, and the worse we allow climate change to become the higher the risks that we will lose these precious ecosystems,” Associate Professor Abram said.

Media are invited to attend any or all the presentations at the Climate Update 2019. More information on the seminar is available here: http://climate.anu.edu.au/events/anu-climate-update-2019
